Course Overview
This course aims to introduce the Arabic language to seekers of knowledge of Islamic sciences. The focus is not on contemporary Modern Standard Arabic nor on conversational Arabic. Students Should be able to recite Quran at a decent pace and flow with correct pronunciation before commencing this course.
Islamic Sciences are primarily transmitted via Arabic texts, especially those authored in the pre-modern era. Broadly Islamic sciences can be summarised into five areas: Fiqh, Usool Fiqh, Aqida and Quranic sciences (Tafsir) and Hadeeth Sciences. Ultimately, the first three sciences convey the technical and academic language of Islamic scholarship which is also the language by which the Quran and Hadeeth are commentated on.
The course will start with Arabic that everyone knows i.e. Quran and Salat. For this the three Understand Quran Courses i.e. 50%, 70% and 90% will be utilised.
Naḥw and Sarf are the “the mother and father” of Arabic and essential for a structured study of Arabic for this Tasheel Sarf and Introduction to Modern Arabic are utilised. The later work will be adjusted for Islamic Science texts i.e. the example texts and exercises will be from such texts
There is a hand writing component of teaching the student Khat Riqa, this is to teach neat legible writing and fast note taking in Arabic.
- Able to understand 90% of the Quran and the entire Salat
- Understand the fundamental Arabic grammar to read and understand classical texts
- Students should be able to read and understand a classical matn (primer) in Arabic in various sciences mentioned above within a year.
- Be able to take notes in Arabic
- Memorise 40 Ahadeeth with their meanings and grammatical rules
- This will become the foundation for further learning, InshāAllāh.
Homework Commitment
In addition to the 90 minute face to face classes, students are expected to give spend 3 hours per week on homework or 1/2 and hour a day. Some of this requires memorisation which can be carried out with other activities.
